Administration Grants Religious Orgs. One year to Comply with Birth Control Ruling
This morning the Administration announced that religious organizations will be granted one year to comply with an earlier decision, which requires employers to cover birth control as a preventative service. Religious organizations, mainly hospitals and schools have objected to providing coverage for contraceptives, and sought a legal exemption from the Administration’s ruling to include birth control as a basic preventative service.
During this morning’s announcement, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said, “I believe this proposal strikes the appropriate balance between respecting religious freedom and increasing access to important preventive services.” However, reports are already predicting that conservative members of Congress will work to overturn the decision and expand the exemption for religious organizations, despite the fact that said institutions serve individuals of all religions.
