Commonsense Pro-Choice Rep. Doug Cox (R-OK) Speaks Out!

In February of this year, State Representative Doug Cox (R-OK) was outspoken in his opposition to legislation that would eliminate the judicial bypass system for young women seeking an abortion in Oklahoma. Rep. Cox, a licensed physician with 25 years of experience said at the time, “We keep passing stuff like this, they’ll be done in the back alleys with coat hangers, people.”  The judicial bypass system allows teenagers to acquire an abortion without the notification of their parents by obtaining permission from a judge. For young women who are victims of incest or domestic violence, this is an important exception to parental notification and consent laws. We applauded Rep. Cox for his commonsense approach to legislation and for understanding the importance of providing young women with options. “Abortions are done in clinics inspected by the Health Department under sterile, medical conditions,” Cox said. “This bill is basically trying to intimidate the providers who do those.”

Now, pro-choice Republican Rep. Cox, who isn’t afraid to stand up to the party to protect reproductive freedoms, has released an opinion editorial lambasting the anti-choice, big government Republicans in Oklahoma for continuing to push harmful legislation:

“All of the new Oklahoma laws aimed at limiting abortion and contraception are great for the Republican family that lives in a gingerbread house with a two-car garage, two planned kids and a dog. In the real world, they are less than perfect.”
