Republican Majority for Choice Denounces Passage of H.R.1797 by House Republicans

WASHINGTON, DC (June 18, 2013) – Today Republican Majority for Choice denounced House Republicans for playing politics with women’s health with the passage of H.R.1797, the so-called Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act.
“Advancing a bill that has already been ruled unconstitutional is an egregious waste of time and taxpayer dollars,” said RMC National Co-Chair Susan Bevan. “Has leadership learned nothing from the last election?” Bevan continued, “The majority of the Republican voters disagree with this constant focus on an extreme social agenda and will continue to distance themselves from the Party. Keep this up and the GOP will lose any hope of gaining a majority and advancing vital economic policy.”
Former New Jersey Governor, and RMC Advisory member, Christie Whitman agreed saying, “At a time of looming budget issues and immigration debates, the Republicans decided to spend time on a bill that will never pass the Senate or be signed by the president. And we wonder why we are accused of a ‘war on women.”
Less than 2% of abortions occur this late during pregnancy. The majority of these are the result of serious fetal health issues only detectable at an advanced stage in pregnancy and emergency medical situations where carrying to term would severely impair the woman’s health. “We must not allow the most extreme in our Party rule for the majority of Republicans who believe Congress should focus on the numerous pocketbook issues facing the country,” said Candy Straight, RMC National Co-Chair. “The current Democratic administration is rife with missteps, from the IRS scandal to the sky-rocketing costs of Obama Care, and voters are eager for common sense leadership and an alternative.” Straight continued, “Instead of putting our strongest policies forward and focusing on solutions, Party leaders are catering to those who only care about morphing their religious views into law. If these Republicans are eager to keep the GOP permanently out of the majority – this type of pandering will do just that.”
Republican Majority for Choice has long been a fierce opponent of government intervention into American’s personal decisions, favoring the right to privacy, limited government and individual freedom over increased and unnecessary governmental intrusion. RMC urges Republican legislators to refocus their efforts on preventive reproductive health policies, like comprehensive sex-education, that are guaranteed to both reduce the rate of and need for abortion, and save taxpayer dollars.

Where did you get your statistics? According to the CDC, 20%+ of abortions occur after the 20th week. Me? I’m an independent voter who registers Republican every year so I can vote in the primaries. I’m not sure what Republican voters you are citing, and why you feel you can speak for them all, but knowing that babies in utero feel pain and are self aware around the 10th week of gestation and the barbaric abortion procedure itself, I’m not one of those voters.
Neena, thank you for commenting. We are always glad to provide additional information on this important subject. The statistics we cite in this blog post come from the independent research organization, Guttmacher Institute, based on data from 2006, stating that 1.5% of abortions occur after 21 weeks.
But in fact, according to the CDC, in 2009, the most recent data available, 91.7% of abortions were performed at ≤13 weeks’ gestation. Only 7% were performed between 14–20 weeks’ gestation, and even fewer, only 1.3%, were performed at over 21 weeks’ gestation.
Additionally, the claims to “fetal pain” are widely disputed and outright rejected by nearly all major medical associations including the American Medical Association and the American Congress for Obstetrics and Gynecologists.
