A federal judge on Monday temporarily blocked the new anti-choice North Dakota law that bans abortion when a fetal heartbeat is detected — as early as six weeks into pregnancy — calling the law “clearly invalid and unconstitutional.”

Texas State Rep. Sarah Davis, a mainstream Republican and the only GOP vote against the omnibus anti-choice bill that was signed into law last week, penned a great op-ed about what it means to be a pro-choice Republican: “As a proud Republican, I believe the strength of our nation lies with the individual and that each person’s dignity, freedom, ability and responsibility must be honored.”
Banning abortions after a specific point in pregnancy has been a popular trend in the states this year. But how states define the starting point for that 20 weeks differs from medical science definitions says doctors— and ultimately this may affect whether these laws pass constitutional muster.
