A group of medical professors is responding to the anti-choice crackdown on family planning clinics that provide abortions by urging hospitals to fill the void and reverse a decades-long trend that has isolated abortion providers from the mainstream medical community.

Albuquerque has become the latest flash point in the abortion wars, where anti-choice groups have collected enough signatures to hold a referendum over whether to make Albuquerque the first city in the country to ban abortions at 20 weeks after conception, just as a dozen states have done.

At least four reproductive health clinics that provide abortions in rural Texas and possibly three more are preparing to close, hobbled by a state law that requires the clinics to meet tougher and medically unnecessary standards.
