The GOP Has Never Needed a Voice of Sanity MorePosted: January 23, 2014
But this weeks RNC Winter meeting seems to be more preaching from the extreme right than speaking for the mainstream majority of Republicans.
On the second day of the RNC’s Annual Winter meeting some Party leaders have shown that they are more interested in ideological grandstanding than winning elections or turning this country around.
You would think that in this important election year the Party would be focusing on the real economic issues facing our nation, like jobs and the growing debt. Yet at the meeting, rather ironically titled “Building to Victory,” extremists in the GOP were instead talking about birth control. (Again!)
During Thursday’s keynote address former GOP presidential candidate Mike Huckabee argued that those who support access to preventive reproductive health care think “women cannot control their libido or their reproductive system without the help of the government.”
Now, we are not Democrats in favor of big government, and we have no interest in this ridiculous talk about controlling anyone’s libido. We are real Republicans interested in finding commonsense solutions that control government spending. And we know that greater access to contraception has very real fiscal benefits for families, our nation and taxpayers. That’s right; preventive care now saves us all expenses in the long term!
As we’ve written about many times before, family planning has wide reaching benefits for women and families; Increased access to family planning is linked to higher adult incomes and higher rates of high school and College completion. Access to proven-effective preventive care saves government and taxpayer dollars.
But Huckabee was right about one thing: the GOP needs to abandon policies that leave them open to a ‘war on women’ moniker and instead wage a “war for women.” However, the Party needs to do more than pay lip service to the needs of American women and families, promoting smarter talking points without substantive policy changes.
