Nevada Takes a Step in the Right Direction!Posted: April 15, 2014
Huge news for the GOP out of Nevada this week – the state party has chosen to remove portions of the platform that previously opposed abortion rights and gay marriage.
“The issue was how can we back out of people’s personal lives,” said Dave Hockaday of Lyon County, who sat on the platform committee. “We need to focus on issues where we can have an impact.” And without a doubt, this move represents a return to true Republican, limited government ideals.
Nevada is receiving huge praise for its return to common sense, and other blocs of the Republican Party should take note. Instead of continually hammering controversial social issues, the Party chose to move towards a big tent. Removing the language on abortion allows Nevada leaders to reject government involvement in personal decisions and welcome a diversity of voters.
This is exactly the type of focus on small government and personal freedom that all Republicans should strive for. Voters have been calling for common sense instead of controversy and ideology, and clearly the Nevada GOP has been listening. Now, let’s applaud these real Republicans and encourage other states to take this same great action in order to foster a more effective, welcoming party.
