WASHINGTON, DC (Jan 7, 2015) – Today Republican Majority for Choice denounces anti-choice extremists in the U.S. House of Representatives for prioritizing the demands of a few extremists over the health and safety of all American women.
On the first day of the 114th Congress, Representatives Trent Franks (R-AZ) and Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) introduced an amendment to “protect” so-called “pain-capable unborn children,” an effort that would unconstitutionally ban abortion before the point of fetal viability.
“With a new Republican majority it is time to show the American people that our party will abide by our founding principles of personal freedom and privacy, and stay out of families private health decisions,” said RMC National Co-Chair Susan Bevan. “Republicans in Congress must stop using women’s health as a political power play and focus on solutions desperately needed by American families.” “We are all united in the goal to lessen abortions and we know prevention is the solution – this is where attention should be focused,” continued Bevan.
This legislation is based on the spurious “science” of fetal pain and targets women and families already facing desperate situations. Well-known statistics show that less than two percent of all abortions happen after 20 weeks gestation. Many of these are the result of serious fetal health issues only detectable later in pregnancy or emergency medical situations.
“Across the country, millions of taxpayer’s dollars are being spent combating the rising costs of unintended and teen pregnancies,” said RMC National Co-Chair Candy Straight. “Increasing access to preventive family planning care has proven to drastically reduce the rate of abortion and teen pregnancy. And yet, instead of working towards finding common ground on these issues, these Republicans are once again catering to extremists and pushing for dangerous and unconstitutional legislation.” “We need Republican leaders who understand that ideologically driven bills come with real economic consequences, not only for women but for all taxpayers,” Straight said.
Republican Majority for Choice has long been a fierce opponent of government intervention into American’s personal decisions, favoring the right to privacy, limited government and individual freedom over increased and unnecessary governmental intrusion. RMC urges Republican legislators to refocus their efforts on preventive reproductive health policies, like restoring funding for Title X and Teen Pregnancy Prevention programs, that are guaranteed to both reduce the rate of and need for abortion, and save taxpayer dollars.
