Tennessee Passes Anti-Choice Bill Targeting AbortionPosted: May 19, 2015
On Monday, May 18, Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam signed into law anti-choice legislation that will impose a 48-hour mandatory delay before a woman can obtain an abortion. The law also requires women make an additional appointment before their procedure for an in-person counseling session. This bill criminalizes physicians, threatening them with a misdemeanor or felony, and losing their medical licenses. Abortion is the only medical procedure that is subject to medical restrictions opposed by physicians themselves. When this law goes into effect in July, Tennessee will become the 26th state to impose medically unnecessary delays for women accessing care. Similar legislation has passed in Florida and North Carolina and awaits Governor’s signatures.
