Anti-choice activists point to the hundreds of inventive restrictions on abortion passed in Republican-controlled states to explain the nationwide drop in the rate of abortion. However,  the data shows that better contraception — combined with a bad economy and a falling teen pregnancy rate — is largely responsible.

Proposed military sexual assault reform fell short on Tuesday of the 60 votes it needed to pass in the Senate, for the second year in a row. The bipartisan amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act would have removed sexual assault cases from the military chain of the command and established an independent justice system to handle those crimes.

Pro-choice groups are fighting to remove anti-choice language from the Rhode Island state budget proposal that would allow any employer — not just churches and their affiliated organizations — to go to restrict women’s private insurance coverage of reproductive health care including abortion.
