State legislators approved nearly 50 bills restricting access to abortion over the last year, according to a report by the Center for Reproductive Rights. A total of 16 states, mostly in the South, approved new legislation, ranging from new consent mandates to stricter protocols for abortion medications. While not all became law — including at least 20 measures targeting Planned Parenthood — supporters of reproductive rights must hear the call to action.

For weeks, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) has been condemning his fellow Republican presidential candidates for their extreme abortion stances, claiming that their refusal to offer exceptions for cases of rape and incest will make them un-electable.

A controversial law passed by Kansas lawmakers earlier this year banning the most common method of abortion in the second trimester would’ve been the first of its kind in the US. However, before it could take effect, a Shawnee county judge blocked it, and a lawsuit was filed by two abortion providers that prompted strong reactions from both sides of the debate.
