RMC files brief in US Supreme Court Case

Today RMC officially filed our first amicus brief with the United States Supreme Court!

This brief will now be part of the deliberations when the nations highest Court hears arguments in Whole Whole Woman’s Health v. Cole.  This case involves restrictions that block access to safe, legal abortion and threaten to close family planning clinics that provide vital preventive reproductive health care.

Current and former Republican officeholders from across the nation joined RMC in filing the brief in calling on the US Supreme Court to uphold the Constitutional protections of liberty and privacy.

That’s right, GOP elected leaders from Arizona, California, Connecticut, Illinois, Kansas, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, North Dakota, Rhode Island, Texas and Vermont added their credentials and voices to emphasize the belief that ideologically motivated legislation designed to deny individual rights is antithetical to the Republican philosophy that only through small, less intrusive government will individual rights be honored and preserved.

Washington, D.C., January 5, 2016 – Today the Republican Majority for Choice (RMC) joined with current and former Republican elected leaders from across the nation in submitting an amicus brief to the Supreme Court calling for the Court to uphold the long held right to privacy and protection of access to safe and legal abortion.

This March the US Supreme Court will hear arguments in the Whole Woman’s Health v. Cole case involving restrictions that block access to safe, legal abortion and threaten to close family planning clinics that provide vital preventive reproductive health care.

“As Republicans, we value a minimally intrusive government, are dedicated to the protection of individual liberties, and opposed to governmental infringement of those liberties,” said RMC National Co-Chairs Susan Bevan and Candace Straight. “The Supreme Court has long protected individual liberties from government intrusion, guaranteeing to individuals the right to make deeply personal and significant decisions without unwarranted interference by the state. The right to choose whether to terminate a pregnancy is just such a decision, and for more than four decades has been a right protected by the Constitution.”

RMC National Co-Chairs Susan Bevan and Candace Straight were joined by RMC National Vice Chair Colleen McAndrews and current and former elected leaders from Arizona, California, Connecticut, Illinois, Kansas, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, North Dakota, Rhode Island, Texas and Vermont.

Former New Jersey Governor Christine Todd Whitman who joined the brief stated “As a life long Republican I hold dear our core party ideals of individual freedom and limited government intrusion.” Whitman added, “Recognizing a woman’s right to make decisions about her own body seems to me to be an inherently conservative principle.”
