WASHINGTON, DC – The Republican Majority for Choice National Co-Chairs Susan Bevan and Candy Straight released the following statement applauding today’s 5-3 Supreme Court decision in Whole Women’s Health v. Hellerstedt striking down an over-burdensome and unconstitutional Texas law limiting abortion.

“Today’s historic decision is a victory for women and for all American families. As Republicans, we value a minimally intrusive government, are dedicated to the protection of individual liberties, and opposed to governmental infringement of those liberties. Today the Supreme Court guaranteed the right of women to make deeply personal and significant decisions without unwarranted interference by the state.”

“We applaud our nation’s highest Court for more than four decades of reaffirming reproductive choice is protected by the Constitution. By overturning burdensome regulations, the Court held that access to safe, effective and readily available reproductive health care must be protected. The 5-3 ruling is the most significant decision from the Supreme Court on abortion in decades and should serve as a wake up call to anti-choice extremists that misguided laws aimed solely at limiting access to family planning will not stand.”

The following current and former Republican officeholders joined RMC in filing an amicus brief before the Supreme Court in this case which outlined that ideologically motivated legislation designed to deny individual rights is antithetical to the Republican philosophy that only through small, less intrusive government will individual rights be honored and preserved.
